Gunbarrel Veterinary Clinic was started in 1969. The original site was a farm, with 3 buildings on it. The old house became the hospital, the barn became a kennel, and a smaller building became a grooming business. The silo is original to the property. Dr. Louis Brad purchased the business in early 1992 to become the third owner. At that time he was the sole veterinarian, and had one full time receptionist, one full time technician, and one part time kennel attendant. With time the practice grew, and in 2001 it was decided to build a new hospital. Fortunately, the property is a five acre site. This allowed for the new facility to be built on the same property, with no interruption of daily practice. There were many considerations in the design of the new building, but Dr. Brad knew from the start that he wanted to keep the farm like charm to the building and the site, and to have the interior express a warm feeling to patients, clients, and staff. The silo became a focal point early on, and many of the design elements reflect it’s importance.
The wooden round entry way has two doors leading each parking area. For safety, there is an additional door that leads into the reception room. Materials from the old barn and a horse shed on the property were reclaimed and used in the design of the round reception desk. A wooden ceiling and stone matching the exterior were used to add to the “country” feel. Leather furniture for waiting clients, a “kids nook”, a conveniently located food closet, and the cozy cat boarding area are all evident as you walk in. All of the cat condos have a view of the reception area as well as a window to the outside. There are four exam rooms, all different to accommodate varying styles and patients. The first two rooms are larger, the third exam room is primarily for cats and small dogs, and the fourth exam room is a non-traditional styled room for acupuncture and comfort. All four of the exam rooms have two doors, one for entry from reception, and the other that backs up to the lab and pharmacy areas. Another innovation that occurred with the new facility was to computerize all the medical records. The entire hospital is networked with computers in all the exam rooms, in pharmacy, treatment, and the doctor’s offices. The lab and pharmacy areas are designed for easy access and good storage. We have an in house blood chemistry machine, and run much of the routine lab work on site. The treatment area is the hub of the hospital. Here we treat all our in hospital patients, prep surgical patients, keep critical care patients, perform dental procedures, and perform many day to day procedures. The room was designed for spaciousness, openness, ease of observation, and care. There are windows from the doctors’ office into treatment, as well as windows that look into surgery. From here we can easily move patients in and out of radiology, surgery, and hospital wards. The surgery space is open with great light provided by the window into treatment. From this photo, you can see the view from our treatment area into surgery. Our hospital ward has comfortable individual runs that have individual in floor heating for recuperating patients. Our canine boarding area is a far cry from our old facility. There is in floor radiant heating, an evaporative cooling system for summer comfort, elevated benches in each run, and many features that make it much easier to care for up to 50 dogs at a time. Kenneled dogs are moved outside 3-4 times a day, and all the runs are cleaned with a central pressure sprayer system twice daily. There is also the option to have your dog participate in doggy day care while boarding. There is office space and a staff lounge upstairs with a balcony with a view to the west. There is a nice view of the mountains from the balcony of the staff lounge.
